Your Simple How-To Guide to Removing Odors from Laundry
Let’s be honest, you have a few smelly laundry items you can’t seem to remove the odors from no matter how many times you wash. Whether it’s your sweat-drenched gym clothes (hey, no shame in your sweat game!) or your dog’s favorite nap time blanket, it doesn’t matter how many times you launder, it seems impossible to remove the unwanted scents. Removing odors from clothing begins with going back to the basics of laundry care. Including, making sure you are not using too much or too little laundry detergent and fabric softener, selecting the best water temperature for the garments, proper drying techniques, and the use of simple ingredients to pre-treat like baking soda, white vinegar and Borax (sodium borate). Removing unpleasant scents and pet odors from clothes doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Follow these tips for fresh smelling clothes and pet bedding. See you at Clean Wave™, your 24-Hour Fort Lauderdale laundry!
Pre-treat at Home with Baking Soda, Vinegar or Borax
Pretreating is the key to success for all laundry stains and in this case, unpleasant odor woes. A few common, inexpensive household ingredients like baking soda, white vinegar and Borax will help conquer those musty laundry smells. To remove sweat and cigarette smell from clothes, mix a ½ cup of baking soda with water in your sink (make sure it’s sanitized first!) or tub per average sized load of laundry. Add the laundry and let soak for at least 30 minutes, gently mixing the baking soda every so often. The baking soda naturally eliminates odors while keeping your clothes safe from losing their color or damaging texture. Another great tool is using white vinegar for clothing odor removal, just be sure to test a small area on the clothing since vinegar is stronger than baking soda. Mix one part white vinegar to four parts water in a large sink or tub. Add your laundry items to the mix and let soak for at least 30 minutes, gently stirring the mix periodically. Once you have finished the pretreatment soak session, wring out the excess water in your laundry, pack into a clean plastic bag and immediately head over to Clean Wave® Laundry to finish the odor removal job!
Select the Correct Washing Machine Controls
Once you have finished pretreating your laundry, it’s time to make sure you’re selecting the correct wash and dry cycles at Clean Wave®. It is best practice to select the cold setting when washing clothing items that have undergone pretreatments. If you feel the need, you may even select Extra Rinse on the washer control pad to really help extract any lingering odors from your clothes. Be mindful of how much or how little detergent you are using per load. Too much laundry detergent makes it harder for the washer to rinse it out, causing a foul damp smell to linger on your clothes, and not enough detergent means a less effective clean. When it comes to washing active-wear at Clean Wave®, skip the fabric softener as sometimes it can leave a film on moisture wicking materials creating a musty smell over time. Not to mention, fabric softener may even damage those special fibers making their moisture wicking abilities less powerful.
Pet Odor Removal from Bedding
Removing pet odors from bedding is not much different than odor removal from your clothing and involves the same simple ingredients mentioned above. First, shake out your pet’s favorite blankets and linens to loosen any stuck-on debris before heading to the wash. Next, mix a ½ cup to 1 cup depending on how large the blanket is, of baking soda with water in a clean tub and soak for 30 to 45 minutes, occasionally stirring the mixture. Baking soda is recommended over the use of vinegar for pet bedding odor removal due to its odorless properties. Animals have sensitive noses and may still smell the lingering scent of vinegar on their favorite bedding. Wring out the excess water, pack it into a clean plastic bag and hurry over to Clean Wave® Laundry to finish the job! Related: 5 Tips for Visiting Clean Wave® Laundry
