Five-Step Tutorial

You can wash many different things at Clean Wave® Laundry in Fort Lauderdale, all thanks to our 83 brand new and ready-to-go washers and dryers all lined up waiting for you to use. Clean Wave® even has a 100-pound washer perfect for large comforters, linens, and other bedding hard to fit in a regular at-home washing machine. But, one thing you will have to leave at home and clean on your own are your shoes. Don’t fret! Clean Wave® Laundry has got your back. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions on how to clean your favorite sneakers at home and give them back the shine they deserve.

Step 1: Remove Excess Dirt
Remove excess dirt by brushing the shoe with a soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush. If there is mud on the shoe, it’s best to wait for it to dry so the dirt becomes flaky and will then fall off easier. Shake off the dirt from the brush between uses while brushing your shoes so it will not transfer from one area to another.

Step 2: Scrub Away Scuffs
The next step of Clean Wave's at-home shoe cleaning process is to scrub away those pesky scuff marks and dirt stains off the plastic parts as well as cloth/leather areas of your shoes. Mix together a cleaning solution made of warm water and a small amount of laundry detergent, or dish soap, to create a soapy mixture. Using a clean wash cloth or sponge, dip it into the cleaning solution and scrub away at the stains with gentle and focused motions. Use a cotton swab dipped in the cleaning solution to reach the nooks and crannies of your sneakers.

Step 3: Wash Your Laces
If your shoes laces are black or some other dark color, they may still be looking OK but for white and light colored laces, they may be ready to be dunked in the bath. Carefully unlace your sneakers and using a small brush similar to the one in Step 1 and the same cleaning solution in Step 2, gently scrub them on a washboard or other hard surface area. Don’t be afraid to soak your laces in the cleaning solution but make sure to allow them to completely air-dry before lacing your sneakers back up.

Step 4: Deodorize the Inside
You want the inside of your sneakers to smell as fresh as they now look, right? Following the same shoe cleaning process as above, remove the insoles of your sneakers and gently scrub with a clean soft-bristled brush. It is best not to overly soak the insoles because it may make the odor worse. Allow the insoles to completely air-dry before placing them back into your sneakers. For an added boost, sprinkle baking soda into the shoes and let them sit overnight before wearing them again to deodorize any remaining smells. Tip: Baking soda is a wonderful, natural ingredient perfect for deodorizing almost anything. Use this trick once every few weeks in shoes you wear often to keep the unpleasant scents at bay!

Cleaning your favorite sneakers regularly may extend the life of the shoe as well as keep your feet fashion forward. Clean Wave tip: purchase a soft-bristled brush/toothbrush and a small bottle of baking soda just for shoe-cleaning purposes the next time you’re at the store. Keep these items in an old shoe-box or plastic bag next to where you store your shoes at home. This way, you’ll be reminded to break out the show cleaning kit once in a while and give some love back to the things that keep your feet safe and secure! Happy cleaning!
